About That Northern Printer

s this is the About page, let’s talk a little bit about me and That Northern Printer. Hi, I’m Lisa. I am based in Lancashire in the North-West of England. I live with my ever-growing son, my heavily bearded husband, the lunatic Labrador, and the ladies (rats) Flo and River. 

I currently work from my little garden studio. My studio holds all my working tools and crafting tools and is my little pink sanctuary. Having my own space helps with experimentation and working in peace "sometimes". 

My background is based in photography. I studied at the University of Central Lancashire, gaining my BA and later my MA. While studying, I focused on social engagement and social and political relationships and engagement in the arts. Although I loved photography, I never really found my flow with digital photography, the software, and editing. However, in my master’s, I worked heavily in the darkroom. Experimenting with photograms, printing imagery, and some cyanotype works. This is where I really enjoyed the practical elements of printmaking.

I left education at the start of the pandemic in 2020. As with millions, I stayed home, homeschooled my son, made banana bread, and had plenty of PJ days. 

After the lockdown, I started my career in education. I studied my PGCE at Blackpool University Centre under one of the most inspiring teachers I have ever had. This opened up working with teenagers and adults in Further Education. Yes, it was really hard in places, but working with them was really good. It also allowed me to figure out that I really wanted to work more with my hands, paints, mixed media, and creating works that I love.

After a couple of years, I unfortunately had some life, health changes, and family commitments, which meant I couldn’t keep working as a teacher. I am not one for sitting and doing nothing, so the idea of working as an artist for myself felt a little like a dream. Knowing this was a very lucky position to be in, I jumped in with both feet. This was a whole new concept and scary at the same time, but it was a new way of working. 

In 2025, I jumped straight into working with local artisan markets and craft fairs. This worked well, even the early cold mornings. However, early 2026, a health issue with a family member has made this difficult, so I am starting another path of selling completely online. I think this is my biggest challenge yet!

So, taking my love of slower printmaking, I started with creating cyanotypes with dried and pressed flowers that I have tried growing or foraging myself (as much as possible). I have created large-scale prints, minis, cards, booklets, and framed works. I have started to develop different works such as mixed media canvases, screenprint work, staching, and more recently looking at crafting my own papers to work with. Coming in the future, I will have stickers  and more artworks drawn by me but made into more everyday items, looking at them such as reading and yarn crafts, as these are my other passions that I have up until now kept separate. 

Other little fun facts about me: I am a huge reader and yarn crafter, whether it’s knitting or crochet. I love working with yarn and, not to mention the people in these spheres, I have made some really beautiful friends in these areas. I work a lot of my yarny projects with hand-dyed yarn; these skeins are made like artwork, and I really appreciate the work that goes into creating these little skeins of art. Reading well, reading is my escape. I read a lot of fantasy, romance, dark academia, and epic fantasy; these are my world away from home.
